The Complete Health & Happiness Recordings is available now for the first time on vinyl. The 49-track, 3 LP set contains the eight Health & Happiness episodes in their entirety.
The Complete Health & Happiness Shows capture Hank Williams and his newly formed band, the Drifting Cowboys, at a crowning moment. Recorded live at radio station WSM in October 1949, these live performances came four months after Williams made his Grand Ole Opry debut. As the year unfolded, Williams released a string of Top Five hits, and in performance with his band, he hit his stride with musicians who proved just as spirited and confident as the singer.
At the time of these recordings, “Mind Your Own Business,” “You’re Gonna Change (Or I’m Gonna Leave)” and “Lost Highway” were current favorites, all of them released that summer or fall. At one point Williams introduces a new composition, saying, “Here’s sort of a new song of mine I wrote you not long ago, ‘I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Imagine the excitement of hearing the song for the first time, performed live across the airwaves? Moments like that make the Health & Happiness recordings vital for fans of Williams and of classic country music. -Michael McCall, Writer & Editor, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
