Sparked by new band-member Gram Parsons, the jingle-jangle Byrds went to Nashville in March 1968 and recorded this blazingly beautiful, groundbreaking country-rock album. The songs they recorded range from choice Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie numbers to the classic country of George Jones, Merle Haggard, and the Louvin Brothers, plus two now-beloved Parsons originals: “Hickory Wind” and “One Hundred Years From Now.” The picking more than equals the quality of the excellent material, with steel guitarist Lloyd Green, fiddler/guitarist/banjo player John Hartford, and legendary lead guitarist Clarence White backing the Byrds, seamlessly knitting together country and rock. Parsons would move on right after this album to the Flying Burrito Brothers, his own solo albums, and the artistic mentoring of Emmylou Harris. But on Sweetheart of the Rodeo he helped the Byrds soar into rich new territory. - Paul Kingsbury, Museum Managing Editor, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
